Our Story

The Question That Started Everything

Long before Together We Smile was founded, we witnessed remarkable acts of generosity towards children. Across communities, individuals and organisations gave their time and resources to causes that were making a real difference in the lives of children. Many of these efforts naturally centred on orphanages and children in urban communities. While we celebrated and participated in those efforts, we couldn’t help wondering about another group of children—those growing up in small villages and rural communities, far from public attention.

What happens to the child living in an unknown village—the child beyond the reach of public attention? Who sees them? Who supports them? Who brings opportunities within their reach?

That question was also deeply personal.

Growing up, much of what our founder knew about the wider world came through the newspapers and magazines her father collected, television programmes and stories about children doing remarkable things elsewhere. She would watch programmes such as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and the KKB Show and imagine what it would mean for more children to have access to opportunities that broadened their horizons and showed them what was possible.

Although she grew up in a comfortable home, access to many of those experiences still felt limited. It raised an even bigger question: if a child from a relatively well-resourced home could feel disconnected from such opportunities, how much more distant must they seem to children growing up in low-income households and rural communities?

That realisation became the foundation of our first promise – We would go the extra mile to bridge the gap.

We would travel beyond the familiar places and bring resources, experiences and opportunities directly to children who were too often overlooked. We wanted to become a bridge between what rural children lacked and what existed in abundance elsewhere.

From that conviction, For Your Smile Outreach was born. Its name reflects the heart of the initiative – travelling the extra mile to bring a smile to a child’s face.

In August 2019, a team of about fifteen volunteers came together, boarded a bus and travelled to Gboosa Village, Ado-Odo, Ogun state.

That journey became the beginning of everything.

Beyond The One-Off Visit

What began as an annual outreach soon became something much deeper.

For the next five years, we returned to rural communities and villages through For Your Smile Outreach, carrying food, clothing, shoes, school supplies, groceries and first aid materials. We shared meals, organised activities, provided basic health support and spent time listening to the children and their families.

Every year, we came hoping to make a difference. Every year, we left with a deeper understanding of what children truly needed.

Some children told us it was the first time they had ever heard someone speak words of encouragement over them. We met children whose curiosity and intelligence shone through every conversation—children who answered questions with remarkable insight, yet had little access to quality education, mentorship or opportunities to develop their potential.

Months after the outreach, some of the children reached out to us. They shared how a conversation with a volunteer had stayed with them after our buses had gone home. Those moments changed the way we understood our work. We realised that while an annual outreach could brighten a day, it could not transform a lifetime. Children needed more than gifts. They needed consistent encouragement. They needed guidance. They needed opportunities. They needed families and communities equipped to help them thrive.

That realisation challenged us to think beyond one-off visits and begin creating pathways that would truly last.

Creating Pathways That Truly Last

The lessons we learned over the years changed the way we thought about impact.

Rather than asking, “How can we organise a better outreach?” we began asking a different question:

“How can we walk alongside children and their families long after the outreach has ended?”

As we reflected on the conversations, observations and experiences from seven years of serving children and communities, we began to recognise recurring themes. While every child’s story was unique, many of the needs we encountered were remarkably similar.

Some children needed someone to believe in them and guide them. Others needed access to opportunities that were simply beyond their reach. Some parents wanted to do their best but lacked the support and knowledge to nurture their children with confidence. At the same time, we witnessed growing challenges among young people, including substance misuse and betting addiction, highlighting the need for intentional guidance, prevention and restoration.

These recurring themes shaped the pathways we began to build.

What started as For Your Smile Outreach gradually evolved into Together We Smile Foundation—reflecting a broader commitment to supporting children, young people and families beyond a single day of outreach.

Today, Together We Smile Foundation brings together a growing ecosystem of initiatives, including For Your Smile Outreach, GEN246 Mentorship Programme, enAbled Parenting Programme, Ategùn Fellowship, unDicted Recovery Programme, Skyvergence Conference and Bootcamp, and The Eyrie Learning Institute.

Together, these initiatives represent our commitment to creating pathways that truly last—walking alongside children, young people and families through different stages of their journey, rather than simply responding to a single moment of need.

The Future We Are Building Towards

We envision a world where no child’s future is limited by their socioeconomic circumstances. A future where the child of a farmer, trader, labourer or unknown family has access to the resources and opportunities needed to compete, grow and flourish alongside a child born into privilege.

We dream of an Africa where children are not overlooked because of where they live, the income of their parents or the circumstances of their birth. An Africa where every child has access to the encouragement, opportunities and support they need to discover their potential and contribute meaningfully to society.

We believe it truly takes a village to raise a child, and that responsibility belongs to all of us. The future of the child in the next compound, on the next street, in the next village or community is our shared concern. Their wellbeing shapes the wellbeing of us all, and their future is inseparable from our collective future.

This conviction gave birth to our guiding declaration:

We Are Because Every Child Is.

A society cannot call itself educated while children remain without access to learning.

It cannot call itself prosperous while a child’s possibilities are determined by the income of their parents.

It cannot call itself healthy while children grow without the care, nourishment and protection they need.

It cannot call itself just while talent is overlooked simply because it was born in the wrong place.

It cannot call itself whole while any child remains unseen, unsupported or excluded from opportunity.

Who we become as a society is shaped by who every child is allowed to become.

When every child is seen, supported and given the opportunity to flourish, we all flourish.

That is the future we are building towards.
